Casa Marianella series documents the conditions of a refugee house based in Austin, TX, Casa Marianella. While Far From Home is based exclusively in bedrooms and living spaces within the house, Casa Marianella is meant to serve as a broader reflection on the ways in which a house is optimized for refugees. This includes unique events, such as a monthly multicultural party called Convivio, as well as required English classes four nights a week. I wanted to document the struggles and triumphs of recently arrived immigrants in a place that unites people from multiple countries around the world. Rather than follow specific residents throughout their daily routine in Austin, I sought to treat the refugee house itself as a character, and focus on the place that residents now call home. This series is ongoing, and I have been documenting the house for nearly two years.
